I think that was my first approach to minigames
aaaaaand yeh ended up quitting after a while
How I first learned about Asterix? XXL1. I was a kindergartener when I got this game. I was really interested but bad at fighting, so my father found cheats somewhere. The music is the best in these games, the graphics are really pretty for 2003, with hypnotizing shine on metals and ice, and I always liked exploring natural areas more than the architecture-heavy worlds of XXL2 and OG. The magic potion really makes you feel powerful, but then they nerfed it heavily for the next games.
XXL2 has the funniest cutscences. My favourite combo from XXL1 - Power Hammer - is available from the start. In the original XXL2 I didn't like backtracking, which is compensated in the remaster with fast-travel... but they also removed save slots? Why? The remaster is also badly optimized, and the graphic setting doesn't change anything besides framerate.
OG has interesting mechanics, but feels short and boring. I haven't finished it yet but I'm not too fond of the minigames I have played.
My main gripe with OG is that it feels sooo slow... The combat, moving and especially jumping, everything feels as if it were in slow motion...
Not to mention the minigames, which drag on forever :/
3 rounds of every minigame which don't change all too much in terms of difficulty, and if you fail one, you have to back to the first round x)
Which gets especially infuriating with the minigames that have a set time frame.
What I like the most:
XXL: Huge landscapes, the thrill of exploration without expecting what's to come ( the levels almost never repeat themselves ), level design going hand in hand with helmet collection and romans
XXL2: The videogame easter eggs, the attention to detail absolutely everywhere, the "clean and metallic" aspect of things, the wacky visuals and sound design, the humor in voice acting.
OG: The best fighting moveset, well exploited a few times, but not enough. Climbing was welcome too. The most refined graphics a PS2 could ever hope to display.
What I don't like:
XXL: The moveset is poor, even after unlocking combos. The UI could have used something better than the black rectangles.
XXL2: The world is a bit small, and requires quite some backtracking. Also, too much "4 torch door" mechanics
OG: Both the world and the story get too short compared to the other games. Besides climbing, the platforming becomes too weak. The Olympic games are fun to play on their own but kinda drag the story.
XXL 1 > XXL 2 > XXL 1 GBA
and XXL2 DS >/< XXL1 GBA ?

Do you even have to ask

haven't tested that much XXL1 GBA
but since it is from my childhood, i might say XXL2 DS even if i know it is bad x)
i actually finished the game 2 years ago or so
Imo XXL1 GBA is the better game by far (if you play with save states, that is :p)
