I wouldn't put XXL3 among those, but yeah
yarnfang
They sure tried.
PegPeregoGaucho

Let's set up a petition to have Tate develop the next Asterix XXL :TotalKappa:
Herr Epsilon
I was about to say
Herr Epsilon
Imagine if they had made the XXL remakes
Herr Epsilon
The gameplay even has the same kind of tempo to it compared to XXL
Failentin
yeah, the running animation alone gives me XXL2 vibes 😄
Herr Epsilon
Yup, I faintly remember a discussion about the conflicting vision in OSome's Asterix games before - them taking the edgy artstyle of the original games and trying to cutify it and brighten it up to pander to the mainstream artstyle of kid's games didn't work. And when they had the chance to build something from the ground up with XXL3, they went full shiny plastic.
Herr Epsilon
I just had a really descriptive example formulate in my mind to illustrate what made ELB's graphics so good and why XXL1 (at least to me) always looked like an Asterix game naturally: Rocks! I know it sounds strange, but it shows how ELB made it a habit to not follow whatever modelling / texturing conventions they had at the time, but tried to emulate the source material explicitly.

Herr Epsilon
XXL3 just does the typical "polygonal structure with painted highlights on the edges" thing which you will find in almost any cartoon game nowadays
Herr Epsilon
XXL1 goes straight for the "let's copy Uderzo's way of drawing moss" approach. Like, how many game studios do you know that would look for details like this?
yarnfang
I can't but agree with facts now can I? Also find it pretty interesting that rocks in video games get more and more sharp angles and corners... When in real life rocks tend to be quite smooth unless they've been cut within the last hundred years.
yarnfang
Sharp rock formations aren't very common outside of quarries.
yarnfang
And yet in games they tend to be everywhere.
PegPeregoGaucho
true

Also, grass in XXL3 looks like seaweed from spongebob while XXL1 looks like, well, grass :Lul:
