In XXL he is small mysterious guy who can beat you with his intellect. In XXL2 he became very advanced in terms of technology yet he became more like a funny sidekick.But oh damn behind that funny sidekick there is way deeper personality then we think.

He never says what his name is in XXL, and "Sam Shieffer" doesn't fit the usual formula of Roman names either. In the French version of Asterix the Legionary, his name is Acidcloridix, and in the English translation it's Vitriolix. Note how both names end with "-ix", and he has Gaulish traits too (moustache, long hair). In the comic, he is working for the Romans, he isn't shown for very long though.

Actually, it's implied that Sam told Asterix about Getafix being a traitor, and then Sam calls himself a traitor. Obelix just repeats that.
