In the album "Asterix and the Laurel Wreath" there are bandits in the streets of Rome; maybe they added pirates inspired by that but later rejected it. In the GBA version there are actually pirates in Rome, though.

I remember asking my father to go through Rome, and of course I would remember the pirates, because my father went through this whole location without combos and of course I remembered the pirates who were 100-200 pieces.
