I think there's a notable change in gameplay: the fact they removed most multipliers and replaced them with lots of crates makes the game become "smash crates" half of the time if you want to buy things, while removing one of the few elements involving skill. This is a complaint I heard by youtubers, who got tired of crates in Normandy.

it was worse in XXL 2. tho there's nothing important to buy as you get combos right after each boss, the maximum amount was X9 and you were only able to get a mulitplier by doing a tip bonus a roman carries around with him.
