There is actually one simple thing I've never tried that is usually one of the first things to test during strat-finding: Sometimes when you go to a point through water or jump enough so you are not recognized on the ground the game teleports you to a previous spawn point when you die, which sometimes messes things up. Even though I don't think it will help in this game, since spawning is done differently compared to most other games of that time
Also dying in water is not a thing in XXL :p

Okay, Yarny, the weird falling through the ground in Rome is somehow connected to the edge's hitboxes of the chests... it works with three out of four chests there
