Well, the form usually is that you just finish whatever run you get with whatever time you get... And then you MIGHT get the chance to get one or two good runs going.

Actually, I got one minute late in the end of Greece with 3 (awful) red times, and arriving in Helvetia, I got a really good opening, (2:53 after rocketeers). I could have saved that time actually, and then I bought the combo at 9k at the merchant later ...
