imagine it was intended to be the original final boss
The DaVinci connection is far-fetched, but I've always had the feeling that there is an undertone of technology vs. nativeness in XXL. The war machines weren't just chosen because they look cool, there's a concept behind it. The developers weren't trying to make some grand statement obviously, but they used it as a tool to elevate the harmless nature of the Asterix comics into something more edgy and epic throughout the game.
I guess this undertone was originally planned to come out a bit stronger (we know that there were several other war machines planned, as well as the "atomic potion" combo), but ultimately there are only a few points left where it shines through - if it weren't for Laforest's music, he took the idea and ran with it.
meanwhile UXXL brings the boss fights to another level. new machines are not needed there anymore xD
I dont know if the combos in XXL2 embrace this or they are cartoonier
At least the electric ball combo does feel like it fits what you described
I've never seen those "other planned war machines"...
And wasn't that unused combo called "atomic menhir"?
Yup, it was called like that
Somewhere on this channel were "concepts" of this combo
Atomic Menhir sounds quite interesting tho
Would've loved to see it in gameplay
maybe it would be like the menhir combo in xxl2
I remember something being posted about an early concept where Obelix was able to grab and carry a menhir and use it for combat. So the combo was probably throwing it to clear the screen from enemies, an Obelix version of mole combo, indeed. And there was still another one called "atomic spiral"...
This thing posted by Spork was in the Romastered files

A video?

Nah, I've searched and it was all just conjectures
Btw, have you seen smthing about unused war machines?
