So much of that game just has a character stand on a button doing fuck all for long stretches of time for no reason, without counting the pointless single player minigame intermissions

Fair enough, worst case scenario I'll just make OG more bearable by adding easy skips for the more boring segments (removing gates, moving the toadball spawners around, etc.)
