i remember people complaining about that
it will keep you already safe from many things
VPN won't really help you from getting a malware though
ye sure thing but like it will block these **download** buttons that give you viruses
or prevent you from entering a website that can harm your device in a way
its not a perfect protection from viruses but it at least gives basic protection from them
rest is up to you and how careful you are

the best thing I use is: Ublock origin. It actually blocks about 99,9% of all advertisements and buttons on all websites.
