am = ante meridiem => before midday/noon; ante means before
pm = post meridiem => after midday/noon; post means after
Hence the following:
00:00 to 11:59 => am
12:00 to 23:59 => pm
I still prefer 24 hours but hey

Just try to remember that it's all about the midday. **a** comes before **p** in the alphabet hence everything before midday is considered **am** everything else **pm** ~~or just use an appropriate time format~~
