the initial cinematic in gaul never ends (black fading billboard never starts). Delta time is too small, so the alpha addition (for the black billboard) is zero, so you're stuck. Only way to continue is to artificially lag the game 
How can this even happen? As if the number is so small that it rounds to 0, no shot `delta_time * delta_alpha` rounds to zero. I added a simple fix, that it must be at least 1.
