That is actually not true at all

Vertex coloring has nothing to do with textures at all, except that they get blended with textures at the end, this was used in XXL to crate lighting and shadows

Nontheless, maybe there is an error with DragonFF or the editor which leads to no vertex colors showing up.

I set a texture for the material (spec1_logo_asterix) and that fixed it
