On this day, 20 years ago, I played Asterix XXL for the first time... remembering this first day forever for a few funny reasons unrelated to speedrun or how good the game was.
martyste
Asterix XXL acted as my first PS2 game, as the very first thing that I did after the intro played out, was try to move Asterix with the Dpad, and be confused to see it not working, as I was used to PS1 games able to use the Dpad even tho prior to that I was playing on a PS One with a Dual Analog. So my older sister ( aged 15 ) spoke from her room ( currently my room ) to tell me to use the left joystick instead, and so my journey began....

And i began many times over, as for a couple weeks, or months, I didn't have access to a memory card of my own, my sister was too cautious about me potentially erasing her FFX saves.

Some would say, I accidentaly learnt to speedrun, by playing Gaul rapidly under 10 minutes at the age of 5, to try once more to get through the first area of Normandy, which was an obstacle for a while.

As someone who didn't know about the camera controlled by the right stick, playing on PS2 on a CRT, I wouldn't notice what was shooting me 5 deadly pilums from the left of the area. That was too scary to approach, and it took a long time for me to eventually explore deeper and find out it was just an archer. After this blunder, nothing posed any more threats. Once I was allowed to save my progress, my first save file would complete the game in exactly 36 hours, sometime before I got XXL2 in December 2006.

Last time i'm posting this pic, I promise. Merry Xmas everyone!

As someone who played the original Spyro trilogy on a relative's PS1 many years before getting a gamepad myself I can understand the struggle of trying new controls
