I followed the download steps 1 and 2 from the PCGW page you linked, then I downloaded the ALchemy restriction remover as described in the first note. Thanks to that I could start the .exe of ALchemy and I added XXL1 and XXL2 by entering their folder path. Doing so will create dsound.dll and .ini files in the respective folders.

Hey, @failentin , there's something you can test tweaking in order to improve audio further. Check "NewAlchemy" tab and try to re-configure some settings at the bottom (per game) in this new "skin" for Creative ALchemy. https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Sound_card#Creative

I installed that earlier this morning but the sound effects still sounded wrong, unfortunately. I'll have to do a more direct comparison later to see if it's an upgrade at all.

I also tried more stuff with dsoal with a guide, but I couldn't figure it out... In the end I was stuck with an error "no sound card detected" when I tried to boot the game up
