Tbh I never tried stuff on Linux so you might be running into different issues...
All I can tell you is that here you can get patches to run XXL 1 and 2 on any 64-bit machine ( your windows version isn't the culprit )
just the other day i found this neat video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-GjKuPYj0I , which helped me understand how to get the videos to run, and also allowed me to run it in the wine win10 mode

then i remembered that i found some other shady patch for xp, and that also got the wine winxp mode to run

Here we have patched files to also run in windowed or widescreen.

Yeah, check out Adrien's XXL editor to mess up with XXL, we just created a mod thanks to it, named Unfair XXL. Once XXL tools are good enough Adrien might look into XXL2
