long story short Sam was a successful and talented engineer that lived in Rome and had a great career in the military. He had a wife and a newborn son. Caesar granted Sam the title of Empire Engineer and ordered him to prepare the most deadly weapons for the empire Which Sam actually did : war machine/stone tower/traps e.t.c. He was overworking and not taking enough sleep One day he stays again late at his work and then happens the unexpected, someone puts Rome on fire and burns most of the town. Sam at that moment was at his workplace and rushes to his family house and finds it on fire. He hears his wife and son screaming for help, but it was already late. The house supports collapsed and blocked the way into the house. All that Sam had to do is witness his family burning to death alive. He would never forget those screams of pain. Legends are going that the baby screaming in Rome is his son that screams from fear. To this day Sam blames Caesar for his family death, because Caesar pushed him to his working limits and didnt let him meet his family. He could have saved his family if he was at home earlier... Which is why when he meets Asterix and Obelix he decides to full fill his revenge and help Gauls to defeat Caesar.
