In-house engines are useful for companies who want full control and don't mind re-inventing the wheel, but pretty painful for reverse engineers lol

personally I'm glad that we're seeing a switch from the 1001 in-house engines of the 2000's to things like Unreal, Unity etc

it makes skill a lot more transferable for game developers looking to get hired

you can e.g. continue to use UE/Unity knowledge in multiple companies rather than needing to relearn new engines in every studio
