It starts at -1, then the game sets it to the duration, and subtracts time from it.

The popping sound after each sekens is quite noticeable. What's up with that?

Maybe it reads more samples than what the speech actually has.

I probably will have to align the number of samples and add silence at the end to avoid the problem.

Because the sound compressions uses blocks of 65 samples, so if the last one contains less then the rest might be carbage.
