But I know that, for example, in Greece, at the start, you can't talk to the merchant immediately, because of the roman at his "guard marker", but there is still a small spot where the game will allow you to talk the merchant, while the roman doesn't move.

And I think it's because when you reach that small spot, the distance between hero and enemy just reaches the minimum distance allowed, that the game lets you interact with the merchant.
