i thought we would never see such modders lol
mr.rubinshtein
who mod PSP

The story is that they had to somehow obtain models in "3DS MAX" (`"*.max"`) format, because they used their proprietary plugins/tools to convert these 3ds max scenes into their own asset-container (archive) format (`"*.ar"`).
pegperegogaucho
did they also used 3DS MAX as their level editor?
flower35
Tate always included build-string into their AR files, for example: ``` c:\game\levels\N1_Lutece\mesh\___N1_E.max exported by makhzi / MAKHZI at Sat Sep 16 18:25:14 2006 ``` It's funny because these have completely no relevance in-game, but thanks to that we have some view at the file structure and build times.

That looks nice 👍

Primarily, it was suggested by one of the devs that level designers made most of things in 3DS MAX and converted whole scenes into AR format, so I think it was a fully automatic process. Script files were written separately.

Yeah, it might sound silly, but even big game studios, like Insomniac, used their modeling applications as their level editors back in the day. I never played the PSP version, but i would definitely try it out alongside your level editor on the weekend :Pogey:
pegperegogaucho
out of all things i did not expect someone, who made a whole level editor, to join :Lul:

And here is a screenshot from my editor :ArtChamp:
flower35
Well, it was made mainly for "Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2", but then I figured out that it could be a more general tool for more titles developed and ported by Tate Interactive (now Tate Multimedia). Also, at the current state, this editor is more like a viewer and "connector" between some custom assets and the actual game (it helps processing things in both directions). I still use Blender to model stuff in 3D.
pegperegogaucho
interesting, is it possible to edit the scripts of XXL2 PSP?
pegperegogaucho
that would be interesting
flower35
They are all plain-text. 😄
pegperegogaucho
:PauseChamp:
adrientd
Yep
flower35
Like, parsed at run-time.
pegperegogaucho
do they have their own proprietary language?
flower35
Yep, but it's not hard to understand what each thing does.
